Workshop metal "soldering"

Soldering with a blow torch is the application of heat to solder to the point were it melts to weld the metal together, some people confuse soldering with soldering irons which is used mainly for electric aplience's and machinery, soldering with a Heat gun means we could melt and connecting two metal parts together and create a new piece from the metal.

FMP Freedom Evaluation

For my FMP we were given the task of producing work related to freedom and also to commemorate the anniversary of the Magna Carta this meant that our project brief required us to produce 63 sheets of paper all illustrated with different images related to freedom E.g Mental health, Fashion freedom, Religious freedom Etc. through out this evaluation I will highlight the key point of this project and explain the steps took to get me to my final destination and the advancement of my commission.

Magna Carta
the project basis was planned around the anniversary of the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta is a one page list of rules consisting of 63 chapters that everyone including the king had to abide by, this first illustration of rule meant that no one was above the law and meant that everyone was entitled to equal freedom. we celebrate the anniversary because it is a sign of freedom and this being our primary basis for our project it gave way to a vast amount of ideas that could be portrayed with in our pieces.

Aspects of freedom
During my project I had to choose aspects of freedom to research and produce work based around it each category I chose to explore is with reason and not just randomly chosen, below ill explain my decisions and why I chose to choose these particular topics.

Religious Freedom
As a Christian I felt that looking into depth the lifestyle and vast difference each religion entitles people to, what with religion being a big part of the new recently I felt obliged to include it in my project  and though many don't see religion as a freedom topic its a way of life that people choose to follow as a way to get through life. for religious freedom I incorporated it into my final piece and created charms out of metal for all the religious symbols in the form of a mobile above a mannequin this is supposed to show each religion in harmony and equilibrium to each other, this also includes gender symbols and also transgender again show we are all equals.

Fashion Freedom
I chose to incorporate fashion freedom as its something that's close to me, what with me working within fashion retail I often think of where my clothing is made and how the people creating these garments are treated (is it fairly?) this is shown in a final piece, I bought a shirt that I knew was sweat shop made and dyed it black and red, I chose these colours because they were very proper gander based colours and stood out to catch the eye, then using heat transfer I printed images from the internet onto my shire that shows sweat shop using company's fashion slogans and images of sweat shops. the most affect of the workshop wrath is children and my shirt shows children working as well in an attempt to spark people to think about where their clothing actually comes from.

Mental Freedom
this aspect of freedom can be quite broad so I have chosen to include LGBT as well because I believe that being able to cope with being judged on a daily basis can be a mental strain and what with a high rate of teen suicides being linked to homophobia I felt that it was important to include this aspect, in addition being able to express a true self in my work is also an important part as I can strongly relate.
for mental freedom I have included it in my Magna Carta pieces and shown clear understanding of the aspect, for most mental illness can feel like your trapped so being able to sort though the problems a human may be having can feel like a lifted burden.

Action Plan
during the course of this project I have kept a diary/plan of what I would be doing during the course of the module, each being a plan for the sessional and never something recorded afterward, the idea behind this plan is to encourage us to be more time efficient, I have used them to my advantage and planned out what id do an hour in advance to keep on top of my time frame and it has worked I have managed to keep to a plan and stay ahead.

Final Piece and commission plan
for my final piece I have chosen to incorporate different aspects of freedom this is shown in my 3 choices of freedom, for my religious freedom I have decided to make a mobile which religious symbols made from metal will hang via a system of string that give mobility to spin and catch the light, I have chosen to illustrate and present it in this way because each religion is equal and so each thread is the same level to show this equality of religion,
I have also designed a shirt that will sit on a mannequin this is illustrated with sweat shop logos company logos and slogans, I have chosen to show it this way because using a shirt that is fashion seemed the most appropriate way to get my message through I also want it to make my audience think about what there wearing and where its from, my shirt also represents the hidden side of what we were and if we were to wear it with its true colours showing it would tell a different picture than a cheap by. for my final one I have chosen to show my mental health as the 63 sheets for the Magna Carta I will place them in a arch on the board so that they are visible and so the final piece flows.

during the planning and commission I had to over come certain problems such as creating a standing for my mobile so it could be supported and hung also locating a mannequin to place my shirt on, to over come these problems I had to search for an unused mannequin and also create a plan for how ill attach my mobile, in the end we decided in a frame that extended from the back and so the charms would still be a focal point with out the bars blocking the main part.

Artist Research
for this project I have chosen to research 2 artist that use freedom in their work one I have researched before the other a graffiti artist, below is a brief overview of the artist.

Banksy
a Graffiti artist who's identity was seen as a mystery because no one had very seen him create his works, most of the work that Banksy creates is freedom based, this is clearly evident in the piece that shows two army officers drawing a peace sign on a wall, this displays a strong message to on lookers and shows a goal that the army wants to achieve, other pieces include a homeless man with a signed saying "keep your money, I want change and two male police officers being affectionate towards each other.

Christian Boltanski
this artist based his work around human tragedy and strongly on the holocaust, by using light and shadows he was able to create his art out of light simply by bending some wire to create his shapes, he then let the light give his pieces there beauty and signature though still showing the sad reality of his work. this idea of human freedom and not having any is what drew me back to his work.

What I felt I did well ?
through out this project I felt I have done well, I have managed to keep to my time frame and engage with the criteria that is required I have shown a keen interest in the topic at hand and have kept to the time frame given. I feel I have explored the criteria well and shown a good understanding of freedom.

What I felt I could have done better ?
I feel I could have created more research on my areas of freedom and shown that I understand through sheet work and blogs. I could have also given a better finish to my mobile charms and made there more exciting rather than a one colour basis.

Time frame
during this project I feel I kept to my time plan well, I have managed all the areas needed well and also have complete all the tasks given to me.

General comments
For a FMP I have enjoyed it a lot and would do it again if I could, hope for something similar in the future and look forward to the church commission.
