final evaluation (animal or building)

 Final Evaluation

For my final evaluation I’ve concluded that I best replicate an animal rather than a building, during my conclusion I will explain the steps and research I have done to conclude and finalize the decision between the two category’s.

For my primary research I studied the local area in which I live, though I am based in the country side I believe this gives me an advantage in my decision because the frequency of wild life surrounding my local area out numbers that  of urban areas thus ruling out urban animals such as cats and dogs (domesticated)

For my secondary research I searched  the internet to find animals best suited to my persona, to conclude I decided that the animal that best describes me was a peacock due to it flamboyancy and elegancy but temperamental and made vain by its beauty. During my secondary sourcing I studied the photos of the peacocks to see how they acted and to see if they correlated with the personality that I possess, studying in depth the colors of it feathers and imitating this into my own style on paper using a range of Medias to complete my overall goal during this project.

Peter Clarks influence over my work in my final piece wasn’t as strong as I’d hoped for due to the materials used and the lack of age and authenticity of the paper though I filled the brief of replicating my persona, this was incorporated by photo copying my original works for my sheets listed as “Sheet about me 1, 2”on close inspection of my 3d design you can see images of my person on the peacocks feather span this is the only part of my work that I feel is inspired my Peter Clark because its usage of materials that have been an influence in my life and the idea of a peacock copies the idea of basing our designs on the local surround, as Peter Clark would do himself.

For my mood board I constructed ideas in my head an though about what best describes me, it was a challenging task to begin with due to the vast amount I could have chosen from in the end I concluded to use music, social media and fashion as the best way to describe me, I assessed this with a secondary opinion “your always quoting Lana Del Rey song which is easy to relate to you” Carmen Hopson this further proves that the mood boards I have produced re relevant to me and reflect me best to those who know me well. During the production of my mood boards I though carefully about the music which was best suited to me and Lana Del Rey and Florence and the machine were the two artist who I felt best descried me I also showed influence of style on the Lana Del Rey drawing as here Bowler hat is something I fondly wear.

For my experimentation during this project I was taught how to effectively make a collage without layering or ruining the materials used and trying to preserve as much as the cut out image as possible to add effect of my final piece, some of my artist sheet that I have created show techniques that I have used eg pencil, water color and color pencil effects for my mood boards I have incorporated streaks of red this is my style of drawing and fascination of monochrome effects the red is an experiment and lifts the image into a new dimension giving  more hostile effect.

For my techniques and material use I incorporated images from magazines and papers and photo copied my drawings and experimental pieces all these materials then became the art in which I built my collage from if you look at my 3D design you can see that I have incorporated pieces of my early work to meet the brief of the given criteria showing inspiration from my surroundings and use of materials related to me. For my peacock water color I used a sponge to give a more rough effect that gives the appearance of feathers.

We were given an in-depth safety procedure as to how we should use a crafting knife, always cut away from self, never place fingers on route of the blades path ensure that the knife is never forced as it may shatter/snap, ensure solid grip of the crafting knife holding the grip areas of the crafting knife so finger don’t slip, use a cutting mat so the materials don’t slip and property damage is prevented.

My strength’s for this project where the pencil pieces and the mood boards about us I was able to create pieces that I felt comfortable with this is shown in my ability to draw people of a suitable standard and style, I was also comfortable with water colors the effect that I used was dapping the brush at a quick pace to create a feather look which was less controlled compared with my previous projects I also feel that my collage work is that of a good quality as I used stencils to create the basic shapes then I cut out more detailed pieces of the peacocks face.

If I was to redo the project again i wouldn’t change that much as I feel I have performed to a good ability range and have completed my personal goal that I set out to achieve as shown, I’d like to have had more time just to neaten up my final piece and add stronger details to the facial area and incorporate more of me into the overall design.

During this project I felt that my mood boards  about me went well because I spent time making shore I included the final details as shown with my drawing with Lana Del Rey I felt especially went well and is one of my favorite drawing among the project collection.

For my improvement I feel that I could have improved my final piece and my animal collage as they appear to be rushed and inadequate to the standards I set out to achieve though I had enough time to complete this project I feel I could have made a better attempt at this part of the project.

I felt that I managed my time wisely as I did some of my work in my own time to reduce the work amount and meant I could concentrate a lot harder than I would surrounded by people and background noise, I completed my project with plenty of time to spare and felt that I managed my time very well.

Peter clarke

Peter Clark is an artist who specialises in collages using materials of a vast amount and collection spanning over a wide spectrum of styles, textures, prints and colours. Other techniques include shading to give density to his work and add edge; this contributes to his outstanding pieces. Clark uses mark-making in his pieces in an innovative, clever and humorous way to create effect and to show deep though and meaning in the methods of his unique art, iconic to many.
Peter Clark’s collage work developed form his illustration work, incorporating bits at a time till it gradually built into a fond interest  and a style of art he would further advance into, “ I began to love doing the paper collage a lot and adored finding the different papers” Peter Clark.
When it came to collecting his materials for his work Peter Clark would search around an area and base his work on the area in which he found his materials, searching flea markets shops and even in rubbish try to scout out papers with “history and memories that have stood the test of time” Peter Clark”
To start his master pieces Clark assembles the pieces roughly in to order of pattern blend, colour scale and texture then start assembling the pieces into an image taking into account the inspiration for his work based on the environment of the area in which he found the materials needed to create the master pieces.
“Very simply can you explain the process you take? Arrange them roughly in order to achieve colours/scales, tear then cut and fold the pieces; glue them down, hey presto! If it works… great, If not start again making changes till I’m ok with it” Peter Clark

Some piece that Peter Clarke is best known for are his icon collages of dogs examples include "good boy" a collage of a bull dog, other include "golden" a collage of a golden retriever and "GRY heyhound"  . Most pieces that Peter Clark creates are based on the environment in which the piece was created or where the idea sprung to life, looking carefully at his pieces you may find traces in the materials used or even the piece itself can explain the type of surrounding in which he situated his ideas.

Ceramic "glazing/painting"

By this session all the pots and modals we'd made had been baked in the kiln, the next job was to paint and decorate them. There were 2 types of paint that we could use but no together, the first were normal clay paints the we painted all over the pot except the bass ( the paint melts and sticks) these colours were more sturdy when applied to the clay and showed we found that the colours were. Ore vibrate than the other type but only gave use simple effects.

The second type was glass paint mixed with cobalt (blue) copper (red) zinc (green) these were the three colours we had we also had clear paints that gave the clay modal a shiny effect, we also had opac paints which was white these paints where dramatically affect by the kiln type eg gas, and electric which were at our dispasoal, gas gives the pots a more wider spectrum of colours than electric because the baking technique is slightly different from electric which gives you a small spectrum but is cheaper and more sustainable than gas a natural resource which is limited.

The idea behind our clay modals was to show a wide array of styles and understanding of what we were doing me if did two in normal clay paints and the other in glass paints to see the effects that the kilns have in the pots during their baking period and how this effects the pot overall finish.

project evaluation

In this module we have been studying I’ve found that I have learnt many new techniques that I didn’t know before and managed to renew skills that I had forgotten about, this module has enhanced my drawing capability’s as well as improving my visual details for observations drawing, which this module has been based on, the new techniques I have learnt are, line shading, scribble shading, effective quick sketching and improved cross hatching ability’s.

I managed to use and apply media by searching the techniques I wanted to use via Pinterest and google images, when I saw the technique I like I would pin it or save it and refer to it when needed, I used these because they had a vast amount of drawing styles and drawings that I could explore/modify and use during this first module.

One of the study’s included A2 page with 4 drawing on each with different backgrounds that altered the appearance of the images being drawing, the backgrounds included a parcel and newspaper back ground this changed the tone and colour of the crayon and gave them different effects such as age and fade I, I used black paper and book pages, the black paper enhanced the colour of my drawing and made them stand out whilst the book pages faded my colours given them a dull effect that is still visible.

Another included a background consisting of art inks applied in any way we wanted, I blew my inks up the page with a straw to give it an inverted dripping effect, as the colours merged up the page they combined making new colours which further added to the effectiveness of the background and objective requirements. This gave my colour pencils a tinted effect altering the look of the object being drawn by enhancing the colour as it enters the different spectrums of colour on the page.

The next one included emulsion paint being added the page in a pattern E.g swirls or bumps this gave texture to our picture but some were distorted by the textures used, I did swirls and successfully managed to drawn the image and keep the texture visible. This effect is good as it adds another sense to the drawing as well as sight a sense of touch to feel the pattern can used as well so you feel the art.

The final drawing was bleach on brusho ink, brusho ink is dried ink that once applied to wet paper it spreads and return back to its liquid form, the inks could be applied in any way we wanted I blew my across the page to give it a fuller effect with a wide variety of colours seeped across the page. The bleach fades the colours of the brusho inks and gives it a secondary layering effect. When drawing n these we need to be careful colour pencils of the same colour and tone wouldn’t show up but an impression from heavy marking would show up ruining the entire piece.

My sgraffito carving is based on a still life set up this effect means that the image will become inverted e.g black become white. Sgraffito includes is the art of covering a page in wax crayon of different colours, then covering the entire page in a black paint mixed with washing liquid, once dried a compass is used to scratch the black away to reveal the wax pattern underneath. Mine is effective because I have managed to catch the shading well and used it in invert, I was able to catch the proportion correctly and have shown detail.

Our homework studies I found where very helpful as they added extra practise so that we were better trained for the next session, if we wanted to create an impressive piece I believe the time given was more than enough to do the work set. I did spend the required amount of time on the drawing and managed to fit it in with my busy lifestyle, all work done so far has been to standard and I’m happy with my efforts. In addition to this I believe that the time frame was long enough to complete the module.

I feel that my observational skills have improved, being taught to really look at something and not to imagine proportion was important and a skill I have vastly improved on and I’m now able to look at an object and draw it with better precession than before, I managed this by practising at home drawing objects and also doing it under time conditions to exercise time efficiency skills.

During this project I managed my time very well I set myself limits to when work should be done way before due dates and fit it into my out of college activity’s.

as said in the previous paragraph I made shore that work was done before due dates so that corrections could be made within a longer time frame this meant that I could create the best work of my capability’s and tweak and correct minor faults within the image, I did feel that I managed my time wisely but could have produced work to a better standard with more concentration towards the work.

During this module I have been taught and have explored many drawing techniques and mark-makings skills, this module I believe has covered a vast amount of techniques and in truth its covered many that I have been curious about, in future lesson ill learn the new techniques as they come as there is no specific technique that I am impatient to learn.

My personal thought toward this module are that I could have been more engaged with it as it is not the style or thing I normally draw and was a relatively new experience for me, though I lacked the required interest in that specific module, there are future module we will be exploring that I enjoy and fit what I like to do. Overall the module was ok but lacked overall class motivation but the techniques and styles that we have used have now been incorporated into my drawing which has further improved my skills in other modules we are studying and mean that this project was an important which enhanced my skill profile.

Coil pots "ceramics"

Coil pots are pots built up of clay that has been pressed through a stensal that created cylinder tubes, device then need to be cleaned at small scraps of clay can dry quick and can alter the shape of the clay when ist come out, we then had to use the potter wheels which made the pots easier to craft. Before starting on the potter wheels we needed to create a clay base so that the wooden pallet could stick to the metal wheel this creates a solid base that make working the easier and prevents damage the the metal dish underneath, to start we had to make as close to a perfect circle as possible this would make our base, the first coil would be added to the. Are and blended to create a strong foundation.

The potters wheel meant that we could neaten the out side and also meant that we could quickly cross hatch the coil ready for the next layer, supports were put in place as the coils became higher so that the pot wouldn't flop and collapse as some peoples did as the pot became higher the sides were neatend and smoothed giving the pot a professional finish.

Pinch pots "ceramics"

During this session we were tasked with making pinch pots and was the most difficult skill so far to learn, there is no soild origin or date as to when pinch pot were first made, though the earliest model/proof of the pinch pots can date back to 40,000 years ago this date is ever changing as archeologists keep find pinch pots that pre date that of the oldest they find.

Our first task was to make a pinch pot bowl to get the basics. You start with your clay, this then need to be rolled into a neat ball, once this is done a hole need to be made through the middle but not all the way through we then had to stretch the hole to create a bowl shape the base was simply pinched from the solid mass at the bottom. We had to keep stretching the bowl till it could only just hold/sustain its structure.

For our second task we had to make a sinister looking vase, we were given a small ball of clay the objective was to make as big a vase as we could from the clay given, this included decoration and clay for a lid, this task posses its own challenges stretching the pot big enough to make a suitable vase but also not over stretching the structure so that it rips of collapses. One problem people were having was the pot becoming lop sided due to the thinness of the clay from pinching this was easily corrected by creating supports in the pot by rolling the clay in the cylinder shapes and placing them in the pot to strengthen it, they need to be blended in otherwise they don't stick.

For our final task we had to make a pinch pot animal, I made a robin he technique behind this method required our experience from our first task. We had to make two bowls with not bases, these then needed to be connected together to create a hollow ball, once the joints are blended and the shape resembles a sphere, decoration was then added. Howls need to be made so that the hollow areas don't exploded and allow for air ventilation during kilning.

Textiles "embroidery"

Embroidery is a form of material work that requires you either cut, stitch, sew, embrode, fasten and use many more techniques to alter or improve a design, a basic background or an item this can include stitching buttons, cutting fancy edges, fray materials or attach other pieces of material.

For this session we used all the pieces that we had experimented with to create an overall embroided design by using items from batik, felt making, and screen printing. By adding all our designs together we created the equivalent of a mood board that we had been doing in our other practical lessons outside the workshops, the theme still remained the same with the design being based on signs in the work place such as cautions signs, warning signs, and information/notifications, . Some of the prints we had done already included images taken from the workshop and meant we could introduce new aspects of the modal that we had not seen before this further increased our ideas and inspiration when in class as to what we can draw.

Ceramic "clay"

The next work shop session we did was ceramics and working with clay, clay is basically mud as a raw material and can be orange as it is lined with metals such as iron, this oxidises over time giving it it's orange tinge, it is purified and turns grey. To start we were told to make clay tiles with the theme of signs in the work place, mine was based on a restriction/no access sign, this was  designed with different levels to add texture and effect to the piece , we rolled out the clay between two guards to stop it spreading far, if it is over rolled it will curl at the ends. Once we had finished our pieces they need to to be left to dry then they can be fired in the kiln to solidify. If the tile had hollow sections where it was raised quite far it need to be punctured with holes so that the peice doesn't explode in the kiln why its cooking this is because the air particles become active and expands caused the clay to shatter with detrimental force and can cause damage to the kiln. This can be a huge safety hazard and can be a fire hazard as well.  After out first attempt we had to make a more complex peice of work, I made a flammable sign in 3d which stood up and was split into layers, like a theatre set with different layers representing different segments of the flame.

Textiles "print making"

Print screening is the art of applying thick inks on a screen using a scweegy and running it along the print area onto paper, cloth, calico or silk to imprint impressions of the patter that isn't covered by wax, the wax covered area protects the material underneath for the ink being ran over the top of the meshed screen, it's recommended that you run your scweegy Over the screen twice otherwise the ink may bleed and distaught the image trying to be printed. Once the screen has been used it need to be cleaned to prevent the waxless areas of the mash from being clogged up by the ink when it dries, after use the dirty screen should not be left any longer than five minutes, it is recommended to jet wash the screen on a low pressure to remove all the ink.

When We did the screen printing we had a variety of different screens and inks to use, in mine I made some Rainbow effect ones where I placed the inks next to each othere the ink then mixes as the scweegy is ran over the screen it creates a fade effect against the material this is visible once the screen is lifted to revial the print. We did 15 pieces in total so that we could make a vast amount of screen printing and different pattern use.

Textiles " felt making"

Felt making is the art of creating basic shapes with wool, mainly refined sheeps wool because it's softer and easier to use, basic patterns and layers are required to  make a base section this is normally done in white like a plain canvas though other colours can be used this depends on the designer and style in which they are looking for. To start the wool is placed on a towel and a sheet of bubble rap then the wool is applied in a two layer system horizontal and vertical applications, small tufts of wool need to be placed, this is needed to increase the surface area of the wool to allow the fibres to fuse when it is rolled. Once more layer has been applied a net is placed over and the whole thing is doused in soapy water. The net is removed and the next layer can be applied this process is repeated until all the layers required have been place. Again the net is applied but this time the entire thing is soaked in soapy water and rolled in the bubble wrap then it needs to be worked, rubbed and rolled for atleast 4 minutes, then it is unraveled, stretched then this process is repeated until at least 15 minutes of work in stages has been done, this gives the fibres time to fuse and creat a sturdy piece of work.

We then had to apply more detailed patterns based on the modal of signs in the work place, the  designs couldn't be to detailed as the image becomes distorted as it is rolled, this is done a few time so the image can become quite distorted.

Textiles "batik"

Batik is a form of art using wax, this style of art involves the application of wax on materials such as, paper, cloth, silk and calico but there are a wide variety of materials that can be used. The idea behind batik is to draw with wax then apply a layer of art ink over the top, news print is required to remove excess ink left on the page so it doesn't run or interfere with the next application of wax. because the wax is resistant to the ink the area covered by the wax is protected and remains the same colour from previous applications, when layer upon layer is applied it is know as a layering technique and there are a vast amount of techniques that can be used but this is the basic one we used. Once the layers have been applied they are covered in news print and an iron is ran over the peice of work to remove the wax, this is because the wax can flack and chip leaving a messy Unprofessional finish to the work, Our designs in this workshop are related to the module of things in the work place e.g safety sign, tool/equipment and machinery were the inspiration for our work.

To start we had to melt the wax in he form of wax beads these were placed in the wax pots and melted down to liquid consistency of water, we then used to tganting tools inserting the melted wax into to the pool/ oasisies displayed as holes in the tools. We then drew with the tganting tools our designs inspired by signs in the work place. I drew a warning sign in wax then using the brushy inks I did alternates to the actual sign the back ground was red and the sign was white! The idea behind it is the wax doesn't absorb the ink leaving the space under the wax the same colour, layers can be applied to keep the previous colour. Once the wax has cooled it need to ironed of to stop the wax from chipping and marking, the art work is place between two sheets of news print and the wax is me,ted and absorbed by the newsprint. Once all the wax has been removed the peace is left to cool/dry.
