Stanley Spencer was born on the 30th of June 1891 in Cookham, England. he was best known for his drawings and paintings and mainly consisted of portraits and self-portraits, some of the work he is best known for is a piece called "The Resurrection, Cookham"  most of the images painted/ drawn by Spencer depict his birth place where he spent much of his life referring to Cookham as "a Village in heaven" painting locals to the village in their Gospel counterparts.
during the time of spencer he frequently expressed his intense if unconventional Christian faith. this is clearly shown in paintings based within Cookham which shows the difference that he felt towards his fellow residents and also his addiction for sexual and romantic obsessions. Spencer's work often provoke great controversy and outrage. in our modern society they still seem broad and experimental expressing deep emotion even fellow artist that look for deep meaning in art can be perplexed by.
Spencer was regarded as a painter of imaginative and religious subject, studying landscape and occasional portrait. studied at the "Maidenhead Technical Institute" in 1907 and also as the "Slade school" in 1908-1912 and was awarded a scholarship in 1910 and also the "Summer Composition Prize" in 1912 creating a legacy for many to look upon.
